Not a compliment.
All the materials used in my project are re-cycled up-cycled or re-used. Some items hold sentimental value to me personally, like the folklore Moldovian scarf you can see here, it belonged to my grandma, she got it as a gift on her wedding during a traditional ritual called “The Dressing of the Newlyweds”. The tradition consists of the bride and groom standing in the middle while guests shower them with gifts.
Before the scarf was something used to hide “provocative” features of women, they would cover their shoulders, cleavage, legs, or even the head. I decided to use it in this photoshoot not only because it works as a remarkable fashion piece, but also as an homage to my motherland, and a protest sign against the taboo that is the female body.
The video was filmed in the central market of Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. During the filming we got multiple comments, catcalls and remarks from mostly men but also women, things like “GET DRESSED”, “COME HOME WITH ME”, “WHORE”, etc. I have added some them into the video and even after seeing it for the hundredth time, it gives me chills.
